Its spacious 6.6-metre interior length is home to luxury apartment-grade fittings that include reverse-cycle air-conditioning, a fully-equipped kitchen with a microwave, gas cooktop and a large fridge/freezer – plus of course a separate shower and toilet rear ensuite and a top-loading 2.5kg washing machine.

Yet despite its impressive size and features when fully-expanded, the new Comet is significantly lighter and stronger than other comparable caravans, thanks to its patented Alu-Tech construction system that has been destruction tested under harsh conditions at the Australian Automotive Research Centre at Anglesea, Victoria. Uniquely, this allows the Comet to be towed by a wide range of medium-sized tow vehicles.

Lightweight

With fuel prices only set to rise and cars becoming increasingly lighter and smaller, lightweight caravans just make sense. They give you access to a much wider range of tow vehicles and not only will they cost you less to take on your travels, they are much safer to tow.

Bailey Australia is the industry leader in lightweight technology and our locally designed and built Rangefinder caravans weigh up to 700kg less, depending on the model comparison, than other local caravans of similar size and equipment.

The secret is our patented five-part Alu-Tech construction that employs impact resistant fibreglass body panels that are bonded and bolted to a unique interlocking aluminium external frame and fixed internally to a very rigid 44mm thick floor. Attached to it is an Australian-designed and robotically-welded DuraGal steel chassis, combining to create a caravan of unrivalled strength yet light in weight, whilst also meeting the highest Grade III thermal insulation standards.

All Rangefinder caravans carry Bailey Australia’s industry leading 10-year water ingress warranty extending to any structural degradation to the bodyshell that arises as a result of water ingress through permanently sealed seams or joints.

Built in Australia

Bailey Australia is the first European manufacturer to undertake local caravan production in Australia, bringing the latest construction techniques, processes and cutting-edge design and technology to our travellers.

The process begins with an understanding of Australian caravanning needs, including feedback from current Bailey caravan owners, as well as understanding the preference of the Australian caravanning public for specific interior layouts. Space, usability, comfort and liveability are key considerations in every step of the process.

Rangefinders are built from the inside out, with local CNC-cut furniture securely fixed in place before being bonded and fastened to the caravan walls and ceiling panels to create an immensely strong overall body structure. Australian designed and sourced chassis, furniture, windows and doors, kitchen, bathroom and laundry appliances are all chosen for their suitability for our conditions and their local service and support.

The components of Bailey’s patented Alu-Tech bodyshell construction system are manufactured at Bailey of Bristol and then shipped to Australia for building onto our locally-designed and manufactured DuraGal steel chassis. This process gives Rangefinder buyers access to the precision manufacturing processes of Britain’s top-selling caravan maker.

Quality & Style

The ‘wow’ factor of European design, enhanced by the use of quality fixtures and fittings best-suited to demanding local conditions, distinguish Rangefinder models from other Australian-built caravans.

Large, light-filled living areas, well-equipped and practical kitchens, spacious ensuites and inviting bedrooms are common features of all models, with Rangefinder buyers given the choice of the most popular Australian and European layouts, depending on the model and their individual travelling requirements.

Attention to detail is a signature feature of all Rangefinders and extends to such details as high quality domestic-grade cupboard hinges, positive-lock cupboard handles, drop-down bench extensions, double USB points located conveniently on each side of the bed and discrete concealed LED strip lighting that also illuminates the interior of overhead cupboards at night.

Endurance tested

Bailey Australia’s West2East Challenge is the first time that any Australian manufacturer has subjected a new mainstream caravan range to such a public endurance test, with the new Rangefinders following much of pioneering route used by the Leyland Brothers nearly 50 years ago.

Travelling via Laverton, Uluru, Alice Springs ands Birdsville, the Rangefinders each covered nearly 8,300km from Australia’s far west to far east, with around 2,200 of that spent on unsealed roads ranging from broad gravel ‘highways’ to badly corrugated and sandy roads during their 14-day journey.

What made the run most remarkable is that the new Rangefinder were not specially strengthened ‘off-road’ models, but full-length and fully-featured standard ‘on-road’ vans without any special modifications to their Australian designed and built chassis and suspension.

No punctures were experienced on either the tow cars or caravans despite the widely varying road conditions and air temperatures in the range from zero to 30 degrees C and nothing structural broke on any caravan or tow car.

Bailey Australia Managing Director Adrian van Geelen was delighted with the result.

“We really stuck our chin out on this trip and the small issues we had with both vans will now be addressed in production versions that are now being built,” he said.

“It was a great opportunity for us to put these new caravans through real-world testing rather than rely on feedback from customers after they take delivery, as many other manufacturers do.” Learn More

Strength & Durability

Bailey’s patented Alu-Tech design technology takes a completely new approach to bodyshell construction. Using a unique interlocking aluminium external framework to which the impact-resistant fibreglass bodyshell panels are bonded and bolted using internal fixings, means your Rangefinder caravan is strong and rigid providing greater protection against the elements.

First line of defence – ingress prevention

  • Use of a five-part panel system reduces exterior seams
  • Structural interlocking aluminium external framework with no external fixing points
  • Flush fit bonded windows and exterior service doors with no external fittings

Second line of defence – ingress management

  • Panels built using a timber free construction, incorporating a composite plastic internal skeleton, high density polystyrene insulation and low maintenance fibreglass inner wall linings
  • Panels incorporating low absorbency buffer zones surrounding window and doors
